Resilience is the Key to Our Success
HEI suspended fundraising in late 2022 while we waited to see how violence in Haiti would affect our programs in Jacmel. But by January the community had banded together to quell unrest and reopen schools so "normal" lives could resume. During the unrest, HEI's Haitian partners continued to run our academic, food and job training programs so the students in our downtown and Cayes-Jacmel centers could feel secure and hopeful. In February, Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport, CT, funded the supplementation of our weekly meals with emergency food kits with staples to feed hungry families of 6-8 people for a month - 14,560 meals! We conducted parent meetings, after school tutoring, and job traing on weekdays and Saturdays. In March, students learned to make mild dish soap and a safe, multipurpose cleaning solution to use in our centers, take home to their families, and sell in their neighborhoods. After 13 years in operation, HEI is resilient!
